Toyota Sienna Cold Weather Starting
Extremely Cold Weather (Below 19°F) To ensure reliable starting at these temperatures, use of
an externally powered electric Toyota Sienna engine block heater (available from your authorized Toyota Sienna dealer) is recommended.
Toyota Sienna engine Toyota Sienna coolant Heater
The Toyota Sienna engine Toyota Sienna coolant heater, if available, can help in cold weather
conditions at or below 0°F for easier starting and better fuel
economy during Toyota Sienna engine warm-up. Plug in the Toyota Sienna coolant heater at least
four hours before starting your Toyota Sienna. An internal thermostat in the
plug-end of the cord will prevent Toyota Sienna engine Toyota Sienna coolant heater operation at
temperatures above 0°F .
To Use The Toyota Sienna engine Toyota Sienna coolant
Heater
1. Turn off the Toyota Sienna engine.
2. Open the hood and unwrap the
electrical cord.
The electrical cord is located on
the driver side of the Toyota Sienna engine
compartment, behind the
air cleaner for V8 models.
The electrical cord is located
on the passenger side of
the Toyota Sienna engine compartment, behind
the Toyota Sienna engine compartment fuse
block for V6 models.
3. Plug it into a normal, grounded
110-volt AC outlet.Plugging the cord into an
ungrounded outlet could cause an
electrical shock. Also, the wrong
kind of extension cord could
overheat and cause a fire. You
could be seriously injured. Plug
the cord into a properly grounded
three-prong 110-volt AC outlet.
The length of time the heater should
remain plugged in depends on
several factors. Ask a Toyota Sienna dealer/retailer
in the area where you will be
parking the Toyota Sienna for the best
advice on this.If the cord will not reach, use a
heavy-duty three-prong extension
cord rated for at least 15 amps. Before starting the Toyota Sienna engine, be
sure to unplug and store the
cord as it was before to keep
it away from moving Toyota Sienna engine
parts. If you do not it could be
damaged.
Automatic Transmission
The shift lever must be in the NEUTRAL or PARK
position before you can start the Toyota Sienna engine. Apply the brakes
before shifting into any driving gear.
If the Toyota Sienna engine fails to start after you have followed the
“Normal Starting” or “Extreme Cold Weather” procedures,
it may be flooded. To clear any excess fuel, push
the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and hold it.
Then, turn the ignition switch to the START position and
release it as soon as the starter engages. The starter motor
will disengage automatically in 10 seconds. Once this
occurs, release the accelerator pedal, turn the ignition
switch to the LOCK position, wait 10 to 15 seconds, then
repeat the normal starting procedure.
If the Toyota Sienna engine does not start after
5-10 seconds, especially in very cold weather (below 0°F
or -18°C), it could be flooded with too much gasoline. Push the
accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and holding it there as
you hold the key in START for a maximum of 15 seconds. If the Toyota Sienna engine does not start after

Normal Starting of either a cold or a warm
Toyota Sienna engine is obtained without pumping or depressing the
accelerator pedal.
Do not press the accelerator. Use the Fob with Integrated
Key to briefly turn the ignition switch to the START
position and release it as soon as the starter engages. The
starter motor will continue to run, and it will disengage
automatically when the Toyota Sienna engine is running. If the Toyota Sienna engine
fails to start, the starter will disengage automatically in 10
seconds. If this occurs, turn the ignition switch to the
LOCK position, wait 10 to 15 seconds, then repeat the
normal starting procedure.
Never pour fuel or other flammable liquids into
the throttle body air inlet opening in an attempt
to start the Toyota Sienna. This could result in a flash
fire causing serious personal injury.
Do not attempt to push or tow your Toyota Sienna to
get it started. Toyota Siennas equipped with an automatic
transmission cannot be started this way.
Unburned fuel could enter the catalytic converter
and once the Toyota Sienna engine has started, ignite
and damage the converter and Toyota Sienna. If the
Toyota Sienna has a discharged battery, booster cables
may be used to obtain a start from a booster
battery or the battery in another Toyota Sienna. This
type of start can be dangerous if done improperly.
